Diversity Works - Executive Report

We have now completed the reports on our 2009 survey of LGBT people who live, work, socialise and use services in West London. This original research, undertaken by our Intern, Anna Roy, maps for the first time the needs of LGBT people in west London.

Key findings of our research

  • 4 in 10 people believe religion is an important part of their lives
  • 50% said that religion has a negative impact on their lives
  • 19% of respondents have been homeless at some point in their lives
  • LGBT people under 35, those who are bisexual and those questioning their sexual or gender identity were 4 times as likely to have suicidal thoughts
  • Lesbian women were twice as likely to find it difficult to access proper health information than gay men
  • Lesbian women were 2 and a half times more likely to report that the information they find is not appropriote to their needs
  • 1 in 5 LGBT people had no one to call on for support when they needed it
  • 6 in 10 LGBT people felt unsafe in west London
  • 6 in 10 LGBT people had experianced verbal abuse in the last 12 months, while 18% had experianced physical abuse
  • Half of all homophobic and transphobic crime is unreported, with the majority believing that the abuse they experianced was not worth reporting

West London LGBT Policy Survey of Mainstream Statutory and Voluntary Services

We are also conducting a survey of mainstream services. It aims to establish baseline information on services and support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) residents across West London by key public and voluntary sector organisations.

The survey has been sent to all Local Authorities, PCTs, Police, Further and Higher Education institutions, Housing Associations, ALMOs and Community and Voluntary Services in West London. The information will be used by the Forum to address needs and gaps in services and support, working in partnership with statutory and voluntary partners and LGBT community groups and residents.

What you can do to help:

· If you work for any of the services listed, ask you senior management and Equality and Diversity Lead what they are doing about filling in the survey.

· Inform your senior management and Equality and Diversity Lead about any work you are doing around LGBT issues so that this can be added to their survey response.
